The vigil is the hardest thing we will ask of you, so it deserves a straight explanation.
Friday 21 August, 9pm to 5am. Eight hours. No convenient exit point.
Why does it have to be at night? Practically, because the night removes competition. There is no meeting to rush to, no shop closing, no dinner to get home for. The evening service is squeezed between the end of the workday and the start of tomorrow. The vigil is not squeezed between anything.
Scripturally, there is a long pattern. Jacob wrestled through a night and left with a new name and a limp. Paul and Silas sang at midnight and the foundations moved. Jesus spent whole nights in prayer before decisions that changed history.
There is something about the hours when everyone else has stopped that has always been associated with breakthrough. Not because God works night shifts, but because that is often the only time we stop.
Practical guidance: sleep in the afternoon if you can. Eat light before you come. Bring water, a notebook and a warm layer. If you are driving, plan how you will get home safely at 5am — or arrange to travel with someone. First Tube services on Saturday morning begin around 5.30am from Stratford.
Do not come to endure it. Come to receive.
